Known for riding off the front of group rides only to be caught in the first mile, we got back on a road bike and realized he must win the Donut Derby at least once in his life. Regularly pledging we’re "not climbers," we can be found as a regular attendee of Trexlertown's Thursday Night Training Criterium or sitting on the couch watching Paris-Roubaix reruns. We have been constant riders of the Hell of Hunterdon in New Jersey and raced the Tour of the Battenkill.

Review: Happy Cat Coffee Peruvian Minca Medium Roast

Review: Happy Cat Coffee Peruvian Minca Medium Roast

For the past two weekends, it has been raining and temperate in our part of the country. Slow mellow weekends call for a coffee that works well passing the time spent watching the rain. Happy Cat Coffee, a microroaster near our office, delivered their Peruvian Minca medium roast to match the day. As it stands, this roast is perfect for those cooler days where a cup of coffee does more than warm the soul.

The rich aroma of Peru coffee is distinct. The rich redolence is easily identified as it’s ground and as it’s brewed. The scent that fills the room from the brewing process involving Peruvian beans is as coffee is meant to be enjoyed. It is also the opening salvo of the coffee drinking experience. One inhale of the mug links the aroma frame of mind to the next step of consuming.

Peruvian coffee is described as bright and crisp, much like an autumnal day. Grown on the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains between 1,200 and 1,700 meters, it’s known as a brew mild enough to not overwhelm the coffee drinking experience. It’s low acidity makes it a great choice for many coffee drinkers looking to match a slow and mellow weekend afternoon. The smoothness of the cup is precisely what we were looking for to match the mood of the day.

While tasting notes vary by customer, Happy Cat Coffee said to expect notes of black cherry, almond, fig and red grape. It was those notes of black cherry that were experienced the most. Being someone who loves black cherry, this was the match needed to complement the day. Plus, the clean taste left a satisfaction that persisted throughout the rest of the day. That’s where Peruvian roasts excel - they satisfy the coffee experience neatly.

Seated at the table with the back screen door in place, Happy Cat’s Peru Minca medium roast added to the serenity of a rainy day. The humid atmosphere emphasized the rich aroma of the high altitude beans. The smooth body kept us coming back for more in a lazy manner, hoping to prolong such a peaceful state. The notes, especially of black cherry, brightened the dark clouds across two stormy weekends to equalize the day. It’s no wonder Happy Cat Coffee’s Peruvian Minca medium roast disappeared quickly.
