Known for riding off the front of group rides only to be caught in the first mile, we got back on a road bike and realized he must win the Donut Derby at least once in his life. Regularly pledging we’re "not climbers," we can be found as a regular attendee of Trexlertown's Thursday Night Training Criterium or sitting on the couch watching Paris-Roubaix reruns. We have been constant riders of the Hell of Hunterdon in New Jersey and raced the Tour of the Battenkill.

Review: One Village Coffee Legend

Review: One Village Coffee Legend

The season for dark roasts are still in full swing. On a recent trip to the local market, we found a bag of One Village Coffee that described Legend with notes of smoke and dark chocolate, the perfect blend for the late winter when the days can’t decide whether to come or go, rain or shine.

One Village Coffee is a local roaster, based in Souderton, PA. Launched in a basement in 2007, One Village has continued to grow. Their site states they podiumed in Villager in America’s Best Espresso category. In 2019 they launched their canned cold brew which was our first experience with One Village.

When talking coffee to the group ride, feedback regarding dark roasts is that they can taste ‘burnt’ because of how far they are taken into the process. While this is our favorite roast, its heavy flavors can be a tough sell. Further, the oily beans can be an issue with those who like a bean to come through as dry and matte-like. Fair enough, but One Village’s Legend dark roast may be the bridge light roasts fans will add to their cabinet.

Legend is a blend sourced from Colombia and Peru. Using several brewing processes, Legend came out dark, but slightly lighter than other dark roasts. With minimal sheen the cup poured clean with hints of chocolate and even lighter notes of smoke. It was balanced with sweet, sugary tastes. Meanwhile those burnt notes never entered the description which is why Legend (wait for it) may be the vice of light roast fanatics. With the mild winter calling for lighter dark roasts, Legend certainly found its place in the lineup at the right time.

One Village is yet another roaster we are spoiled to have in the creakybottombracket.com area. The beans are certainly worth picking up at the local shop. Or, better yet, join their subscription club and leave the reordering to them. This is one of those blends nearly everyone can agree on. While the winter of 2023 has yet to be noticeable, Legend certainly packs an intensity.
