Known for riding off the front of group rides only to be caught in the first mile, we got back on a road bike and realized he must win the Donut Derby at least once in his life. Regularly pledging we’re "not climbers," we can be found as a regular attendee of Trexlertown's Thursday Night Training Criterium or sitting on the couch watching Paris-Roubaix reruns. We have been constant riders of the Hell of Hunterdon in New Jersey and raced the Tour of the Battenkill.

Review: Happy Cat Coffee

What are the chances a coffee roaster would reside right across the street from our offices? Aside from wonderful luck, and based on the amount of cat pictures in cyclist’s Instagram posts, cats grab people’s attention. We managed to get our hands on Happy Cat Coffee during the lockdown - an immense stroke of luck - and returned to it at the beginning of the year. This small roaster is definitely worth checking out, starting with their sampler offerings.

Happy Cat Coffee is a small company looking to bring unique beans to the front door. Named after current and past company cats, Happy Cat Coffee is supremely focused on the experience. A quick trip around their site features links to the current batches of coffee, care packages, subscriptions, and a link called the Coffee Pantry. If one is looking to immerse into the coffee brewing world, Happy Cat Coffee links select items. From drip machines to Chemex to grinders, the link has many items to get started.

We obtained a Colombian origin dark roast at the start of the year. (Happy Cat Coffee offers all three roasts of each bean.) This coincided with new brew methods entering the office. We were excited to get to work brewing, particularly because of the full pound bag. Happy Cat Coffee does offer twelve-ounce bags, too. Using drip coffee, nitro cold brew, and Chemex, we went through a bevy of brewing approaches. This is the experience Happy Cat Coffee may have imagined. After feeling the milk chocolate jolt of the drip coffee, we experienced the citrusy notes released by the Chemex, as well as the deep flavor from the nitro keg. Aspiring to impress Happy Cat Coffee, we relished the advantage of clicking the burr grinder setting to accomplish all three brews.

Happy Cat Coffee strives to produce roasts of beans not normally found in other places. This line echoed as each coffee sip brought intense flavor while making the whole office waft with the smell of quality coffee. Should we feel the need to experiment with other roasts, Happy Cat offers much in the customization of each bean from roast type, to weight, to grind type if requested.

We here at creakybottombracket.com try to support locals as much as possible. Who knew we would outdo ourselves by finding a coffee roaster a shorter distance than would require a bike? With nearly endless possibilities in roast options and brewing suggestions, Happy Cat Coffee is the roaster to explore for the upcoming cycling season. With samplers and subscriptions available, this neighborly roaster is passionate about great coffee.
