Known for riding off the front of group rides only to be caught in the first mile, we got back on a road bike and realized he must win the Donut Derby at least once in his life. Regularly pledging we’re "not climbers," we can be found as a regular attendee of Trexlertown's Thursday Night Training Criterium or sitting on the couch watching Paris-Roubaix reruns. We have been constant riders of the Hell of Hunterdon in New Jersey and raced the Tour of the Battenkill.

Review: Backyard Beans’ Nitro Organic Cold Brew Coffee

Review: Backyard Beans’ Nitro Organic Cold Brew Coffee

(2022) There are streaks through the summer when hot coffee does not satisfy. It’s that experience of sweating through the first moments of the morning before wishing a cooler coffee cup to slide across the breakfast nook and delay the heat of late summer. Even though September is upon us, the forecast is calling for sustained time in 90-degree days. That’s cold brew territory.

Not far from the office, a spirited bike ride distance, is Backyard Beans, a coffee shop that supplies hot and cold coffee the right way. We’ve talked up Punch in the Face nitro offerings as well as the beans. Backyard Beans has been serving nitro coffee in aluminum cans just long enough to get us excited about hot late summer days. Offered in shops around the area, this can is definitely one to pick up for a daily perk.

Backyard Beans Nitro Organic cold brew is conveniently packed in an aluminum can for on-the-go consumption. Where Backyard Beans’ Nitro cans shine are the two options for drinkers: open and pour for cold brew, or shake for a hard nitro pour. At the office we tend to opt for vigorous shaking followed by a podium opening that sprays everywhere. One piece of advice is to cover the top with a paper towel and open the can in the sink after shaking.

What is released is everything needed on a hot day of cold brew consumption. Immediately the aromas of coffee and chocolate burst from the can. It fills the room. The hard pour releases the nitrogen bubbles that cascade downward in the pint glass. There’s no need for ice here. It’s meant to be viscous and heavy. With a creamy head the Latin American beans take over the experience and create an intense and satisfying mouthfeel packed with coffee flavor, chocolate, and a nutty finish. Be careful. These cans are full of caffeine. That’s something to remember when you consider cracking open a second. The laser focus is on its way; give it time, but we don’t blame the sudden urge to go for another.

There have been mornings where the coffee machine has not gurgled and beeped signifying the end of brewing. Backyard Beans Nitro Organic Cold Brew has been used at the start of a hot day. It’s also been used as a post-hot ride beverage to right the system after a strenuous outing. Either way, a can of Backyard Beans works wonders in the summer.

Though a bit pricier than a standard cup of coffee, the jolt provided could be from the consideration of twice the caffeine level, so in effect it’s two cups of coffee in a can. There is usually at least one can of Backyard Beans Nitro Organic Coffee in the refrigerator at the creakybottombracket.com office. The reason others don’t steal is simply because they are so heavily respected and coveted during those late summer heat waves.
