Known for riding off the front of group rides only to be caught in the first mile, CJ got back on a road bike and realized he must win the Donut Derby at least once in his life. Regularly pledging he's "not a climber," he can be found as a regular attendee of Trexlertown's Thursday Night Training Criterium or sitting on the couch watching Paris-Roubaix reruns. CJ has been a constant rider of the Hell of Hunterdon in New Jersey and races the Tour of the Battenkill before going into seasonal hiding on cross-country ski trails.

Review: Big Bobble Hats Belgian Beast Cycling Hat (£20.00 GBP)

(2018) Bomb Genesis. Beast from the East. Snowy Strade Bianche. Winter 2018 is hanging on in an acute way. Luckily one Scottish company has come along with style and panache to keep the head warm as well as perch the largest pom-pom atop the head. For the remaining cold spring days, the Big Bobble Hat is the way to go.

I have a great mechanic friend in Dan at Doylestown Bike Works who brought back a gaggle of Big Bobble Hats from his UCI mechanic certification. With the current Nor’easter raging outside I have positioned the Belgian Beast hat near the front door with alacrity; I get the wear it without looking desperate. Sixty mile-per-hour winds never sounded so good.

The Big Bobble Hat is exciting on several levels. The first attractive aspect is the thick ribbed stitching of the hat. Think ice hockey socks tight knit, meaning supreme warmth in the coldest of cyclocross pits. With the tight stitching, wind is held at bay and the fit feels comfortable. Those who have worn a Big Bobble Hat have joked it will melt your head.

Further levels include the incredibly patriotic colors available for the cycling fan. I was blessed with the Belgian Beast, and there are other countries such as the ‘Flying Dutchman’ orange, ‘Italian Stallion’ blue, and ‘Flanders!’ yellow and black. Should your country not do its part in the peloton, one can choose the 'Beam Me Up Spotty' polka-dot hat for any high adventures in spectating. According to their product, these names have been selected by the masses. Perhaps Boaty McBoatface is in production?

The final touch comes in the eagle’s nest-sized thicket of a pom-pom atop the beautiful detail. This feature is roughly half the size of one’s head and can definitely be felt when cheering on the Local Hero at the pre-season crit. Perhaps this is the secret weapon to keep all that cranium heat after all.

At a moderately priced £20 (currently $27 USD), these hats deliver on the bang for the money. When packing for the upcoming Spring Classic season, make sure to throw in the Big Bobble Hat. Then be prepared to answer scores of times where you got the hat. With a garment as attractive as this, people will definitely stop you with the hopes of getting their hands on one.
